West Ham and Mexico captain Edson Alvarez has publicly denied any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, an alleged kidnapping in Mexico City, issuing a statement on social media in which he threatened legal action against those associating his name with the affair.
What has been alleged?
The accusation originates from Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez, a film producer who told Mexican publication TV Notas that he was forced into a vehicle at gunpoint in the Polanco district of Mexico City in 2024. Ordonez claims the incident was carried out by the family of Jonathan Toache Bedolla, described as Alvarez's former father-in-law. Crucially, Ordonez does not allege that Alvarez participated directly in the kidnapping; he claims, rather, that the player was aware the plot was under way.
Ordonez adds that he had been commissioned to produce a documentary about Alvarez's life and says he was owed £150,000 for the project at the time of the alleged incident.
Alvarez's response
The midfielder did not let the allegations pass without answer. In a statement posted to his social media accounts, Alvarez described the accusations as entirely without foundation and said he had, until now, chosen to stay silent.
"I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me," he wrote. "Over the past several months, my name and image have repeatedly been used to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me."
Alvarez went on to say there are "limits" to what he would tolerate, and that attributing "knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature" to him without presenting evidence "clearly crosses that line." He accused certain media outlets of prioritising "sensationalism" over "accuracy and truth," and said he would keep his focus on his family and his career. His statement added that he would consider legal action.
The Championship context
For West Ham, who currently sit at the top of the Championship, the timing is awkward. Alvarez, who joined the club from Ajax in 2023 and has made 74 appearances for the Hammers, has barely featured so far this season. According to the BBC report, his only outing to date has been a Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth, meaning he has yet to appear in the league campaign.
That limited involvement is worth noting. West Ham's start to the season has been one of the stories of the division, and the squad's depth has been tested across a demanding fixture list. A player of Alvarez's calibre being unavailable to the league side, for whatever reason, is a matter of genuine sporting interest. Whether this off-pitch distraction has any bearing on his availability or standing within the camp remains to be seen.
Alvarez, 27, made his Mexico debut in 2017 and now captains the national side, having featured at international level across two World Cups. He is, in footballing terms, one of the most prominent names at the club. Any prolonged off-pitch story involving a player of that profile is not something a promotion-chasing side will want simmering in the background.
What happens next?
Alvarez's statement is clear in tone: he denies everything, he reserves the right to pursue legal remedies, and he is asking to be judged on what he does on the pitch. The allegations originate from a single source in a Mexican publication; no legal proceedings against Alvarez have been reported, and he is not accused of direct participation in any crime.
West Ham have not, as yet, issued a formal club statement on the matter. Whether they choose to do so publicly, or handle it privately, will itself be a signal of how seriously they regard the situation. For now, Alvarez's own words are the only response on record.
