West Bromwich Albion have confirmed that full-back Nolan Galves will play no further part in this Championship season after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury sustained in early September.
What happened to Galves?
The 23-year-old, signed from French club Rodez AF during the summer, had made five league starts before being named among the substitutes for Albion's trip to Derby on 9 September. He was introduced as a 37th-minute replacement after Brayann Pereira was sent off on his debut, but Galves himself lasted only a further 15 minutes before leaving the pitch following a challenge with Mo Fuseini.
The club's director of medical, Tony Strudwick, confirmed the full extent of the damage in a statement published on the club's official website.
"Nolan sustained a significant knee injury in the game against Derby early in September," Strudwick said. "Following consultation with a knee specialist he underwent surgery earlier this week, including an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. We expect him to miss the remainder of the season. He will complete his rehabilitation with the football club and we will support him every step of the way."
A cruel blow for a summer arrival
Galves had arrived with a clear brief to provide competition and cover at full-back, and his early-season performances suggested he had settled quickly into Championship football. An ACL reconstruction typically carries a rehabilitation timeline of nine to twelve months, meaning the Frenchman is unlikely to be available until well into next season at the earliest.
The injury compounds what has already been a testing period for Albion. The club were also without Brayann Pereira following that sending-off against Derby, while Strudwick confirmed that Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Callum Styles both picked up minor injuries before the international break, though he expressed confidence that both would be available for selection shortly. "We're hopeful they will be back in contention for the next match," he said.
The news arrives alongside a separate setback at the back end of the window, with Albion already managing a number of fitness concerns heading into the second month of the campaign.
Eyes on Birmingham as the break ends
Fifth-placed Albion return to Championship action against Birmingham on 10 October (12:30 BST kick-off), and Carlos Corberan's side will be eager to rediscover their early-season momentum after a run of mixed results. The loss of Galves for the season will prompt questions about squad depth in the wide defensive areas, and supporters will be watching closely to see how the manager adapts his options across the remainder of the campaign.
With a play-off push very much in the picture, the pressure is on Albion's remaining full-back options to fill the void left by a player who had looked, before misfortune intervened, like one of the more astute signings of the summer.
