Kevin Miller, the goalkeeper who spent three seasons at Watford in the mid-1990s and twice won the club's player of the season award, died unexpectedly overnight on Tuesday. He was 57.

Miller had been working as goalkeeping coach at Wigan Athletic, having taken up the post over the summer to link up again with former Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell. He passed away suddenly, leaving the football community in shock.

Three years at Vicarage Road

After coming through the Cornish non-league scene with Newquay and Falmouth Town, Miller joined Exeter City in 1989 and helped the club win the fourth-tier title across a 200-game spell. Birmingham City signed him in 1993, and he then moved to Watford, where he stayed for three years and left a lasting mark on supporters and staff alike.

Winning the player of the season honour twice at Vicarage Road spoke to the consistency he brought across his time in Hertfordshire. His command of the penalty area and competitive drive made him a firm favourite before Crystal Palace paid £1.5 million to take him to the Premier League in 1997.

He played all 38 league matches in Palace's relegation season of 1997-98 and remained first choice as the club finished 14th in Division One the following year. A three-year stint at Barnsley followed before he returned to Exeter City in 2002. Spells at Bristol Rovers, Southampton and Torquay United brought his playing career to a close, leaving him with 738 professional appearances to his name.

A coaching career cut short

Miller transitioned into coaching and worked as Exeter City's goalkeeping coach before stepping down from that role in June. He crossed paths with Caldwell again at Wigan Athletic, where colleagues describe his arrival as making an immediate impression.

"Although Kevin's time with Latics was far too short, he quickly became a much-loved and respected member of our first team staff," Wigan Athletic said in a statement. "His experience, professionalism and passion for goalkeeping were clear for all to see, while his uplifting personality made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him."

The club added: "Kevin's contribution to football was significant, but for those who worked alongside him, it was the person he was that will be remembered most."

Tributes from former clubs

Exeter City were among the first to pay their respects. The club described Miller as having earned "a place in the hearts of supporters with his performances between the posts and his wholehearted commitment to the club", adding that "his time in Devon left a lasting impression" and that "his contribution remains a big part of Exeter City's story".

Watford supporters who watched Miller play throughout the mid-1990s will remember a goalkeeper who competed fiercely for every ball, organising those in front of him and producing saves that went beyond the ordinary. That back-to-back player of the season recognition was not routine; it reflected performances that shaped what was a formative period for the club.

Wigan Athletic passed on their condolences to Miller's wife Fiona, daughter Esme, and all those close to him. Exeter City said the club would commemorate his memory "in an appropriate way".

Football, at every level from the Cornish non-league scene to the Championship and beyond, lost one of its own this week.
