The final whistle at Loftus Road left Vitor Matos staring at the joint-heaviest league defeat Swansea City have suffered in 24 years. A 5-0 hammering at Queens Park Rangers, sparked by a goal conceded inside two minutes, sent the Swans into their first back-to-back losing run of the season and confirmed, in the head coach's own words, the hardest day of his managerial career "result-wise".
Now, six days on, Matos says his players have given him a reason to believe the damage can be repaired. Swansea return to the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday to host an in-form Blackburn Rovers side, and the message from the training ground is pointed.
"It was of course a quite demanding week as you will expect," Matos said. "But we had honest conversations between us and I think what I'm pleased with was the reaction on the training pitch, with the intensity, with the togetherness, with the ambition. That was good to see and of course what we now want is to react on Saturday."
The collapse at QPR
Swansea's defensive structure unravelled almost from the first whistle in west London. Conceding so early handed QPR the initiative, and the Swans never recovered their shape or their nerve. The result followed a narrow home defeat to West Ham United the previous weekend, making it consecutive losses in the league for the first time under Matos, who has been in charge for 11 months.
Despite that difficult fortnight, Swansea still sit second in the Championship. Matos is clear, however, that their position cannot mask the lesson QPR delivered.
"It's a reminder for all of us," he said. "If you allow your opponent to have something, they all try to take an advantage. It's a really competitive league, good squads, good players, good managers. So you really need to be always spot on and that's what we've been working on."
The head coach has never lost three successive matches since taking charge of the club, and the players will be aware that Saturday represents a test of how quickly they can restore the standards that carried them to second place.
Blackburn arrive in form
Tony Mowbray's Rovers arrive at the Swansea.com Stadium sitting 10th in the table and carrying genuine momentum. Blackburn have won four of their past six league matches, a run that has repositioned them firmly in the upper half of the division.
There is one vulnerability worth noting for Swansea: Rovers have managed only one away victory so far this season. Whether Matos' side can exploit that record will depend heavily on how quickly they rediscover the cohesion that the QPR result stripped away.
Injury news
Swansea go into the fixture without wingers Moussa Yeo and Ronald, both still sidelined, while Cameron Burgess remains a long-term absentee. The one boost for Matos is the return of right-back Josh Key, who missed almost seven weeks through injury. Key's presence restores defensive options on the right flank at a time when Swansea need every experienced head they can get.
Matos has repeatedly stressed that one poor result should not define a season's work. The evidence from a second-placed position supports that view. But the Championship offers no grace periods, and Blackburn, confident after a strong recent run, will arrive at the Swansea.com Stadium with every intention of compounding the Swans' difficulties.
"One result doesn't erase what we're doing," Matos said. "But we want to go back to ourselves on Saturday."
