Jenson Metcalfe has described Millwall as a "hunger club" after settling quickly into life in the Championship following his summer switch from League One Bradford City.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who joined The Den ahead of the current campaign, has started all five of Millwall's league fixtures this season and is firmly established in the heart of the Lions' midfield. He is expected to keep his place when Blackburn visit on Saturday (15:00 BST).
A mentality that fits
Speaking to BBC Radio London, Metcalfe was candid about what drew him to south London and why the club's culture feels like a natural fit.
"Millwall is like a hunger club, a club which is like a fight; every single time you put the shirt on you want to win 110%," he said. "That suits my outlook as a player. I just want to win on every occasion. The basics of football is hard work. If your ability's not all there, as long as you can give 110%, I don't think anyone can ask any more of you."
Metcalfe's rapid ascent through the divisions has been a feature of the past three seasons. He spent 2024-25 in League Two with Chesterfield before joining Bradford for a League One campaign that ended in play-off semi-final defeat. That personal experience of falling short at the penultimate hurdle has, he says, shaped how he views the challenge ahead at Millwall.
Shared pain of the play-offs
Millwall endured a painful end to last season, missing out on automatic promotion on the final day before losing to Hull City in the play-offs. Metcalfe knows that feeling all too well.
"When I was at Bradford, we also lost out on the play-offs in the same way. I know how it feels. It hurts at the time, and it still hurts now," he told BBC Radio London. "You've just got to take it with a pinch of salt and use the motivation to move forward and take it from there."
He also pointed to the expanded play-off format as extra incentive for Championship clubs chasing the top six. "Now that the play-offs have opened up an extra two places, I'm sure everyone will be looking at the top end of the table," he added.
Red card relief
Metcalfe's first weeks at the club were not without drama. He was shown a red card during Millwall's 4-0 home win over Bolton Wanderers last Saturday after a melee involving players from both sides. The dismissal was subsequently rescinded, but the incident clouded what should have been a celebratory occasion: his birthday fell on the Sunday.
"Sunday was my birthday and it ruined it," he admitted. "I kept looking back over the incident numerous times trying to see where the violent conduct came into it." The successful appeal means he is free to face Blackburn this weekend without suspension.
Keeping perspective on ambition
Despite making a strong start, Metcalfe is measured about how he approaches proving himself at second-tier level.
"I'm trying to showcase myself, but I'm also trying to keep control of that," he said. "I don't want to do things in my game that I think I can do well just to prove myself to the lads. I want to do what suits what the Millwall team want from me moving forward. I'll do everything to stay in the role they want me to do."
That blend of self-awareness and competitive drive will be tested throughout a Championship season that Millwall, still stinging from last term's near miss, will approach with clear intent. For a midfielder who has climbed from League Two to the second tier in three seasons, the hunger runs deep on both sides.
