Birmingham City have appointed John Murtough as director of football, bringing in one of English football's more experienced administrators to shape the club's structure as they push for promotion from the Championship.
Murtough, 55, joins St Andrew's having spent eleven years at Manchester United, where he rose to football director before leaving in April 2024. He steps into the role vacated by Craig Gardner, who departed in June after steering the club through a difficult period that included the change of ownership and recovery from relegation.
He begins work on Monday, after this weekend's Championship fixture at Cardiff City.
A broad remit at St Andrew's
Birmingham have confirmed that head coach Chris Davies will report directly to Murtough, whose responsibilities span recruitment, data, performance analysis and the academy-to-first-team pathway. He will also collaborate with Hope Powell to align the women's team's development with the wider football strategy at the club.
The appointment addresses a concern that had surfaced during the summer: the gap in football expertise between Knighthead Capital Management, the US-based owners, and the coaching staff. Murtough's track record at the top level fills that space directly.
"This is a great football club with brilliant fans and enormous potential," Murtough said. "There is a clear determination from Knighthead to build something special for the long term, both on and off the pitch."
Knighthead echoed that ambition in a board statement: "We want Birmingham City competing at the highest level of English football and we are building for sustained success, both on and off the pitch."
A career built at the top level
Murtough's football career began under David Moyes at Everton, where he worked as a sports scientist before progressing to head of performance. He then joined the Premier League as head of elite performance in 2012, before moving to Manchester United in 2013.
At Old Trafford he climbed from head of football development to football director, a promotion that gave him overall responsibility for strategy across all football functions. His tenure covered the signings of Jadon Sancho, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount, as well as the managerial transitions from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer through Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick and ultimately to Erik ten Hag. He had departed before ten Hag's own dismissal in October 2024.
His most recent role took him to Italy, where he served as director of global development at Serie A side Atalanta.
Before joining United, Murtough also held roles at Everton, Fulham and Coventry City, giving him a grounding in clubs operating at various levels of the English pyramid.
Arriving at a moment of momentum
Murtough's arrival comes with Birmingham sitting fourth in the Championship, three points behind leaders Swansea City. Davies's side have collected nine points from their three matches since the international break, a run that has lifted both their league position and the mood around the club.
The timing matters. A director of football shapes recruitment windows, and the January transfer window will arrive with Birmingham well inside the play-off positions and with realistic ambitions of pushing for the automatic promotion spots. Having Murtough in post before that window opens gives the club a clear decision-making structure at a critical moment in the season.
Gardner, his predecessor, had been a popular figure at St Andrew's and his departure left a visible gap. The extended search for a replacement drew some scrutiny, but the calibre of the appointment signals that Knighthead were prepared to wait for the right candidate.
For a club that spent time in the third tier not long ago, appointing a director of football whose previous employer was one of the world's largest clubs represents a statement of intent, even if the Championship table will ultimately judge whether that intent translates into results.
