Yousef Salech has spoken warmly about his developing understanding with summer signing Jack Moylan, insisting the pair bring out the best in each other as Cardiff City build momentum in the Championship.
Salech scored what proved to be the only goal in Saturday's home win over Birmingham City, a deft 31st-minute finish set up by Ollie Tanner. It was the Dane's third league goal since Cardiff's return to the second tier for 2026-27, and all the more notable given he had been pencilled in for no more than 45 minutes after missing five weeks through injury.
"I love playing with Jack. I hope he feels the same," Salech told BBC Sport. "He's more mobile than me, but probably I suck in more defenders closer to me and give him space, so I hope and think we both benefit from playing with each other when we do."
The forward was actually a late addition to the starting line-up. Krystian Bielik, formerly of Birmingham, was stood down shortly before kick-off after picking up a groin problem during the warm-up, and Salech received word of his promotion "two-and-a-half minutes" before the referee's whistle. He went on to last the full 90 minutes in what was described as atrocious conditions.
His winner was not without drama either. Salech had earlier seen a penalty saved by Blues goalkeeper James Beadle before making amends with his clinical finish. The striker was phlegmatic about the missed spot-kick.
"I think the best thing as a player is to see it as any other chance in the game. I've missed a lot of chances in a lot of games. I've also missed penalties before," he said. "But that's not going to end the game. There's still 70 minutes left to play."
Aberfan visit shapes build-up
The win carried additional weight beyond the three points. The match fell in the week that Cardiff marked the anniversary of the Aberfan disaster of 1966, and manager Brian Barry-Murphy had made it a priority to ensure his squad understood the significance of the occasion.
The players and staff visited Aberfan earlier in the week, spending time at the cemetery where 116 children and 28 adults who perished in the catastrophe are buried. They also watched a documentary and held discussions among themselves.
"First of all, I wasn't really educated or aware of this historic event before this week, but Brian and all of the staff of the club have informed us on Monday," Salech said. "We've seen almost a whole movie about it and also spoken between players."
The experience clearly left a mark. "It was very emotional to get out there and see the memorial and speak to people who were involved and who were there that day," he added. "Speaking about their beloved ones and classmates and family members and everything. And obviously I think it had a big impact on us on Tuesday and towards the build-up towards the game. It seemed as though there was that little bit extra bite in every tackle, every chase for the ball."
Salech was careful not to overstate the connection, but acknowledged it may have played a part: "That comes from a team doing well anyway, but I just thought if that had played a little bit into it, it could have."
Where the Bluebirds stand
The victory keeps Cardiff within six points of both the play-off places and the relegation zone, a position that underlines how tightly the middle of the Championship table is packed. With last season's top scorer returning to fitness and a promising forward partnership taking shape, Barry-Murphy will hope the Bluebirds can push upward rather than look over their shoulders in the weeks ahead.
For Salech, having come through the full 90 minutes after a lengthy absence and scored the decisive goal, the personal momentum looks to be firmly back on track.
