Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that defender Scott Wharton is fit and available for selection after a thigh injury ruled the 29-year-old out of every Championship fixture this season so far.

Ninety minutes for the under-21s paves the way

Wharton's return has been carefully managed. Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, Mowbray confirmed the centre-half came through a full 90-minute outing for Rovers' under-21 side on Monday, clearing the final hurdle before first-team consideration.

"He played 90 minutes for the under-21s on Monday so he's available for the squad and will be travelling with us," the head coach said. Wharton is in line to be included in the squad for Rovers' upcoming Championship fixture.

The injury, sustained during pre-season, has been particularly frustrating given Wharton's availability record last term. He managed only 12 Championship appearances in the previous campaign, also curtailed by injury, meaning consistent minutes at second-tier level have proved elusive for the left-footed defender.

Competition for a key position

Mowbray was candid about where Wharton fits in his thinking. Sean McLoughlin has been an ever-present at left-sided centre-half this season, and the head coach has no intention of disrupting that form lightly.

"He's a left-footed centre-half and our left-footed centre-half, Sean McLoughlin, is playing every minute of every game at the moment so it's great to have potential options ready and an experienced player who could help us moving forward through the season," Mowbray said.

The comment underlines both how settled Rovers' defensive shape has become and why genuine squad depth matters as the Championship fixture list intensifies. Having a capable, experienced alternative rather than a developmental option gives the management far more flexibility when managing minutes or dealing with future knocks.

A squad coming together at the right time

Wharton's return is the latest in a series of players finding their way back into contention for Mowbray. Rovers head into the weekend unbeaten in their past four league matches, picking up three wins in that run to climb to ninth in the Championship table, and the head coach believes the improving results are directly linked to a broader recovery in his squad's fitness levels.

"The evidence is there when you're making substitutions against a tough side and to bring on Moussa Baradji and Augustus Kargbo is a positive in that we've got experienced players to bring on and help the team get the result," Mowbray noted, referencing Tuesday's away fixture at Bristol City.

He contrasted that with an earlier home match against QPR, when injury absences forced him to turn to players making their debuts from the bench, leaving Rovers at a disadvantage when the game needed experience to close it out.

"If anything it's going to give me problems over who I leave out of a 20-man matchday squad," Mowbray added, a problem most Championship managers would welcome.

What it means for Rovers' season

A squad with real options is the foundation Mowbray has been building towards since he used an international break to address his thin numbers. Wharton's availability, combined with the form and fitness of other returning players, gives Blackburn a more complete picture heading into a congested spell of Championship fixtures.

Ninth place is a promising platform, and the ability to rotate or react to injuries without calling on inexperienced cover could prove decisive as the season moves into its next phase. Whether Wharton forces his way into the starting eleven will depend on his sharpness over the coming weeks, but his mere presence in the travelling party is a meaningful step forward for the club.
