After 37 days and eight rounds of fixtures, the Championship pauses for an international break. It has been a breathless opening block, and already a handful of clear themes have emerged for the clubs battling it out across the second tier.
Nobody has run away with it
Perhaps the most striking feature of the table right now is how compressed it is. Only seven points separate the top 15 sides, making it genuinely difficult to separate contenders from pretenders at this early stage. Swansea City lead the way with 17 points from eight games, chased closely by QPR, Stoke City, Bristol City and Charlton Athletic. West Bromwich Albion have made a remarkable turnaround, swapping the bottom five of last season for the top five this time around.
It is worth tempering any premature excitement, though. According to BBC Sport, since the Championship adopted its current name in 2004, only twice have sides that topped the table at this point gone on to win promotion: Leeds United in 2019-20 and Sheffield United in 2022-23. Three of the remaining four eight-game leaders did not even finish in the top ten. Swans supporters should enjoy the moment, but the season is only just beginning.
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portsmouth also have a game in hand, having had a fixture postponed due to Carabao Cup scheduling, so the table will shift again before the international break concludes.
Goals are flying in
There have been 277 goals scored across the division's opening eight rounds of fixtures, which is 36 more than at the equivalent stage last season and achieved across one fewer match. According to Opta data cited by BBC Sport, that is the second highest total at this stage since the Championship's 2004-05 rebrand.
The explanation appears rooted in how the game is being played rather than any defensive collapse. Crossing and aerial play are producing results at a rate not seen for several seasons: 47 goals have arrived from crosses so far, with 44 of those coming via headers, the most at this point of a season over at least the past five campaigns. Nine goals have also originated from throw-ins, the second highest total at this stage in 14 seasons. That is a significant shift: between 2013-14 and 2020-21, the average across the same opening spell was fewer than two goals from throw-ins per season.
At the individual level, Bristol City's on-loan Crystal Palace full-back Rio Cardines has contributed six assists already, which is understood to be the highest total of any player across Europe's top leagues at this stage of the campaign.
Sheffield United settling in
The Blades made headlines early in the window with the signing of Jordan Ayew, and Chris Wilder's side followed that up with a 2-1 win at Blackburn courtesy of a Peck goal. Sheffield United know this division well having won the title in 2022-23, and Wilder's experience of navigating the second tier will be a key asset as the campaign develops.
Burnley's slow start a warning to all
While the clubs on this site's radar have largely made encouraging starts, the wider context is sobering for any side that finds itself struggling. Burnley, who are not in our division's listed clubs but serve as a cautionary tale for the entire league, sit bottom with four points and no wins from eight games. BBC Sport notes that no side has ever been promoted from the Championship having been without a win after eight fixtures. Several, however, have survived relegation, which offers some comfort to the slower starters across the division.
For Bristol City, Charlton, Stoke, QPR, Swansea, West Brom, Birmingham City and Sheffield United, the international break arrives at a useful moment: time to review, regroup and prepare for the remaining 38 games of what already promises to be a tightly contested campaign.
What comes next
When the Championship resumes, the picture may look quite different. Game-in-hand matches will be played, players return from international duty with varying levels of form and fitness, and the first real injuries and suspensions of the season begin to bite. With the table so tight, any three-game winning or losing run could shoot a club into play-off contention or drag them into a relegation battle. That is what makes this division so compelling, and 2026-27 already looks every bit as unpredictable as the best of them.
