Brian Barry-Murphy has indicated that Cardiff City are close to completing a signing, with the Bluebirds' head coach speaking publicly about an injury crisis at centre-back that has left the club stretched to breaking point at the back.

A crisis that cannot wait

Speaking after Cardiff's 2-2 draw at Derby County, Barry-Murphy confirmed that the club are actively pursuing defensive reinforcement. Gabriel Osho's knee injury against Wrexham added to an already lengthy list, leaving the club without a single recognised centre-back available. Perry Ng and Joel Bagan, both natural full-backs, were pressed into the middle at Pride Park simply to fill the void.

The other three centre-backs already on the treatment table are Dylan Lawlor, Calum Chambers and Will Fish, making this an extraordinary set of circumstances even by the standards of a difficult early-season injury run.

"We obviously have four players out injured in that position at the moment, so it is unusual, but it is an area of the team that we are looking to improve anyway," Barry-Murphy told reporters, according to BBC Sport Wales. "Fingers crossed something will happen soon."

Transfer business so far

Cardiff's summer business ahead of their return to the Championship has been modest by most measures. Goalkeeper Nathan Trott and attacker Jack Moylan are the club's only permanent additions of the window, with full-back Calum Scanlon returning on loan from Liverpool. The defensive injury situation has sharpened the need for further business considerably.

Barry-Murphy was careful not to specify exactly which position a new arrival would fill, keeping his cards close to his chest on the exact nature of the pursuit. He was, however, unambiguous that something is expected to happen before the week is out.

When asked about Calum Chambers specifically, the manager offered little in the way of encouragement. "Not so close," he said. "He hasn't trained with us yet. He still has some issues with his knee. It's difficult to say [when he will be back]."

Measured optimism on the pitch

Despite the injury difficulties, Barry-Murphy struck a broadly positive tone about the performance at Derby, a ground where many Championship sides have struggled to take anything this season. The Bluebirds have yet to record their first win back in the second tier, but the manager insists the foundations are there to build on.

"I'm very proud and pleased with the performance. We wanted to try and win, go for the game and try to be as aggressive as possible," he said. "The players certainly did that. I'm just a little bit disappointed that we couldn't get the win."

He added: "We feel like we can improve a lot, and we will. We can't ask for more in terms of effort."

Eye on the cup tie

Cardiff's next outing is a League Cup second-round fixture at home to Norwich City on Tuesday evening (19:00 BST), a tie that brings the Bluebirds up against another Championship side. Barry-Murphy's comments suggest the club are working against the clock to get a new face through the door before that fixture, though the manager stressed that every incoming player is assessed carefully.

"We make sure that the players we bring in can improve the squad and that we don't waste any money on behalf of the owners and the supporters, who contribute so much to the club," he said.

How quickly the club can navigate the market and get a deal across the line could have a material bearing on Cardiff's fortunes during what is shaping up to be a demanding period, with fixtures and injuries combining to put the squad's depth under real pressure.
