Lincoln City have smashed their own transfer record by signing Danish striker Mikkel Ladefoged from Swedish Allsvenskan club Vasteras SK, the Championship side have confirmed.

The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Sincil Bank, with the undisclosed fee understood to surpass the approximately £2.5m Lincoln paid for Romania international defender Andrei Coubis in July, according to BBC Sport.

A signing that tested the window's limits

Sporting director Jez George acknowledged the deal was far from straightforward to execute, pointing to the fact that Vasteras SK compete in the Swedish Allsvenskan, which runs on a summer calendar. With the Swedish season in full swing midway through the Swedish campaign, negotiating a release for a player as integral as Ladefoged proved particularly challenging.

"This is a transfer that was extremely difficult to execute in this transfer window but one that we pushed really hard to secure," George said. "We respect that with the Swedish Allsvenskan being a summer league, we are now halfway through their season, so that creates an obvious complication to negotiate a transfer for anyone as important to a team as Mikkel was to Vasteras."

George confirmed that the condition of the deal meant it could not be completed until the close of the window, yet Lincoln were sufficiently convinced by Ladefoged's profile to hold their nerve and wait: "Mikkel is such a unique profile that we were willing to wait."

Who is Mikkel Ladefoged?

Ladefoged arrives with an impressive recent record, having netted 19 goals in 29 appearances for Vasteras SK. He began his career in the lower tiers of Danish football with Naesby BK before earning a move to Superliga side Sonderjyske, and he then crossed to Sweden when he joined Vasteras SK in January 2025.

The forward is making his first move to English football, and he made no secret of his excitement at the prospect of competing in the second tier.

"It's a dream to play in England and I feel ready to take the next step in my football career," Ladefoged told the Lincoln City website. "There are a lot of games and it's a hard league, but I think Lincoln fits my style of play. I know there are going to be plenty of tough games, but I'm really looking forward to playing in the Championship."

What this means for Lincoln's season

Lincoln are in the midst of their first Championship campaign in several years, and the recruitment of a striker at a club-record outlay underlines the ambition behind the project at Sincil Bank. The Imps have already added Yunus Konak on loan from Brentford this window, and the arrival of Ladefoged gives manager Michael Skubala a further attacking option as the second-tier schedule intensifies.

Lincoln's next Championship fixture is a home match against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, 1 September (19:45 BST), and it remains to be seen whether Ladefoged will be available in time to feature, given the timing of the deal's completion.

What is clear is that Lincoln's hierarchy have shown a willingness to back the manager with significant resources. Breaking the club's transfer record for a forward who scored at almost a goal per game for Vasteras is an emphatic statement of intent from a side eager to establish themselves in the division.
