West Bromwich Albion have confirmed that full-back Nolan Galves will play no further part in their Championship campaign after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery. The 23-year-old joins a growing injury list at The Hawthorns at a point in the season when the margins between a promotion push and a mid-table drift can be wafer thin.
How the injury happened
Galves, a summer signing from French club Rodez AF, had started Albion's first five league matches of the season and looked to be settling into the division. He was not in the starting line-up for the trip to Derby County on 9 September but was called into action as a 37th-minute substitute after Brayann Pereira was sent off on his debut. The Frenchman lasted only 15 more minutes before going down after a challenge with Mo Fuseini, and it quickly became apparent the damage was serious.
Director of medical Tony Strudwick confirmed the extent of the problem via the club's official website. "Nolan sustained a significant knee injury in the game against Derby early in September," Strudwick said. "Following consultation with a knee specialist he underwent surgery earlier this week, including an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. We expect him to miss the remainder of the season. He will complete his rehabilitation with the football club and we will support him every step of the way."
A costly blow for Albion's depth
Losing a full-back for the entire campaign is a serious setback for any second-tier club, but it stings particularly given the context. Albion currently sit fifth in the Championship table, close enough to the automatic promotion places to matter but not close enough to be comfortable. The second tier is unforgiving: a single injury to a position already short of cover tends to expose squads rather quickly, and the management will need to act in January if the squad is to remain competitive across a heavy fixture schedule.
Strudwick also confirmed that Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Callum Styles missed international duty during the break due to minor injuries picked up before it began. He expressed cautious optimism that both would be available for selection soon, though Albion supporters will note that "hopeful" is not the same as certain.
What it means going forward
Albion return to Championship action against Birmingham on 10 October (12:30 BST). That fixture is already generating attention for reasons beyond football, and the club will want their preparations undisturbed by further fitness concerns. A Birmingham derby is precisely the kind of match where squad depth is tested: the intensity is higher, the margins are smaller, and every player who is unavailable is felt more acutely.
It is worth being clear-eyed here. A run of decent results can mask a thin squad, and Albion have looked solid enough in patches this season. But four or five good performances do not resolve a structural problem at full-back, and losing Galves for the entirety of the season means whoever fills that role will need to do so consistently across 30-plus remaining matches. That is a lot to ask of a replacement, particularly in a division as physically demanding as this one.
The club will also be conscious that ACL recoveries rarely follow a straight line. Galves is 23 and has time on his side, but the standard rehabilitation timeline for an ACL reconstruction runs to nine or ten months at minimum. Albion's medical staff will be focused on returning him in the best possible condition for next season, with no shortcuts taken.
In the short term, the manager will have to decide whether the existing squad can absorb the loss through the autumn and into the winter window, or whether emergency measures are needed sooner. Championship seasons are long, and the promotion picture rarely resolves itself before March. West Brom can still be part of that conversation, but only if the squad holds together.
