Queens Park Rangers face the real prospect of being without Glen Kamara for Friday's Championship fixture against West Ham United, after the Football Association of Finland indicated it would refer a club-versus-country dispute to Fifa.
What happened during the international window?
Kamara, 30, was recalled from Finland duty by QPR before Tuesday's Uefa Nations League fixture against Hungary, according to the Finnish FA. Head coach Jacob Friis made no secret of his frustration: "Glen was in a difficult situation as his club insisted he leave the camp and return to London. He had to make a decision that was obviously not what we wanted."
Fifa regulations are unambiguous on this point. Once a player has been released for international duty, he must remain available to his nation for the full window. An earlier return requires the explicit agreement of the national association. Crucially, a player who is recalled without that consent cannot play for his club until five days after the window closes, unless the national association separately agrees.
Friday's game at Loftus Road falls three days after the window ends. That gap alone places Kamara's participation in serious doubt, even before Fifa formally weigh in.
The Finnish FA's position
Marco Casagrande, general secretary of the Finnish FA, was direct when speaking to the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper: "The regulations are very clear, and in our view, they were not fully followed in this case. Fifa will definitely be informed. The player has not been available for the entire international window, as the regulations say he should be. After that, it's up to Fifa how they proceed with the matter."
The Finnish FA told BBC Sport its immediate focus was on the Hungary game, but the complaint appears certain to follow.
Stephan cautious, but dialogue ongoing
QPR manager Julien Stephan acknowledged the situation without committing to a firm line in his pre-match media duties: "There is a dialogue between the club and the Finland federation. We will take a decision after that discussion." That phrasing suggests QPR are not yet conceding the argument, but it also signals there is no clean resolution in sight before kick-off.
The loan midfielder, who joined from Rennes, has featured in seven of Rangers' eight Championship games this season, starting three and coming off the bench in four. He has not been the most prominent name in the side, but losing any reliable option from midfield is a disruption QPR can ill afford given the demands of a packed second-tier fixture list.
What it means for QPR's position
Rangers currently sit sixth in the Championship table. That is an encouraging early-season return, though anyone tempted to read too much into eight games should resist. Six points in the table can evaporate across a difficult fortnight; the division has a habit of humbling sides who felt settled.
West Ham arrive as opponents who carry their own momentum, and a QPR side missing a midfield option through a regulatory dispute rather than injury or form will feel the absence in a different, more avoidable way. The club took a risk by recalling Kamara early, and that decision now looks likely to cost them his services for the very game they wanted him back for.
Whether Fifa move quickly enough to issue a formal ruling before Friday remains unclear. If they do not, QPR must then decide whether to play Kamara and risk a heavier sanction, or stand him down voluntarily. Neither option is comfortable. The safest course, given Casagrande's explicit statement that Fifa will be informed, is almost certainly to leave Kamara out and avoid compounding the situation.
It is a self-inflicted headache at a point in the season when clean preparation should be the priority.
Frequently asked
- Why might Glen Kamara miss QPR's game against West Ham?
- QPR recalled Kamara from international duty with Finland before the end of the window without the Finnish FA's agreement. Under Fifa rules, a player in that situation cannot play for his club until five days after the window closes, which would rule him out of Friday's game.
- What do Fifa rules say about clubs recalling players from international duty?
- Fifa regulations state that a player released for international duty must remain available to their national team for the entire window. If a club recalls a player early without the national association's consent, the player is ineligible to play for that club for five days after the window ends.
- How important is Kamara to QPR this season?
- Kamara, on loan from Rennes, has appeared in seven of QPR's eight Championship games this season, starting three and coming off the bench in four. He is a regular part of the midfield rotation under manager Julien Stephan.
