John Mousinho has been asked to solve a puzzle that changes shape every week. Portsmouth have used 28 players in the Championship already this season, and only three have started every league match. Just seven have completed 90 minutes more than once. That is not a roster management preference so much as a reflection of how many players have been unavailable, undercooked or carrying knocks at any given moment.
A squad stretched before it has truly been tested
The raw numbers tell part of the story. Three of the club's wide players, Josh Murphy, Keshi Anderson and Luke Brooke-Smith, have all suffered injuries. Marlon Pack missed the start of the season. Regan Poole has dealt with a hamstring problem. Zak Swanson and Ebou Adams both arrived from last summer carrying knocks that lingered. Conor Shaughnessy has shown signs of returning to his best but Mousinho has been careful with him, given that the defender has battled injury across each of the past two campaigns. Whether Shaughnessy can play more than once a week remains, in the manager's own words, an open question.
Among the new arrivals, Marko Milovanovic, Jayden Meghoma and Tyrese Shade all joined needing to build fitness rather than hitting the ground running. Shade and Milovanovic had limited training time in the weeks before their moves were completed, which is a common enough consequence of protracted transfers. Milovanovic has since picked up a minor injury of his own. Abu Kamara was eased in gradually. Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, who is only 17, has been managed carefully on minutes, and is reportedly playing through a broken hand.
To be clear: injuries are not a Portsmouth-specific problem. Every club in the division is dealing with a version of this. But the concentration of setbacks across the wide positions in particular has narrowed Mousinho's options in areas where he needs variety and direct running.
The international break offers little comfort
The pause in the league calendar might seem like a gift, but Mousinho himself has suggested he would rather be playing. With only around four Portsmouth players expected to be on international duty, the majority of the squad will be in training rather than travelling, which does at least allow for recovery time and some fitness work. Whether that translates into players being ready to complete 90 minutes consistently is the key question.
It is worth noting that Portsmouth's schedule to this point has been somewhat lighter than the Championship norm. The postponement of the Wolves-related fixture means they have played just one midweek match so far. That relative breathing space is about to end abruptly.
Eight games in 28 days looming
After the break, Portsmouth face five matches in 14 days, and eight in 28 days. The run begins with the South Coast derby, which is never a game that allows for a cautious approach. The fixtures that follow are, by any fair assessment, demanding. Mousinho will need more players capable of lasting a full game, and he will need that quickly.
The squad depth is genuinely better than in previous seasons under his management, and that matters. Having quality on the bench makes the plate-spinning manageable, up to a point. But depth is only useful if those players are fit enough to contribute meaningful minutes. Right now, that is not a guarantee.
The optimistic reading is that the international break arrives at a useful moment: a chance to get bodies right before the schedule becomes unforgiving. The cautious reading is that Portsmouth have yet to face a sustained run of fixtures in quick succession this season, and they are about to find out whether the squad can handle it. We do not have enough evidence yet to say which reading is correct. The next month will settle it.
