Cardiff City are winless through six Championship fixtures, and the statistics make uncomfortable reading: four draws, two defeats, and a head coach calling openly for more ruthlessness. Brian Barry-Murphy is relaxed in public, but he knows the picture needs to change, and soon.

The Bluebirds' 1-1 draw with Stoke City extended a run that has seen them pick up just four points from a possible 18. They sit in the bottom reaches of the second-tier table, and while Barry-Murphy remains calm, the numbers leave little room for sentiment. Six games in is still early, but the gap between Cardiff's performance data and their points total is a problem that does not fix itself.

Chances created, goals not scored

Against Stoke, Cardiff registered 27 attempts on goal and enjoyed 70 per cent possession. They conceded sloppily, had to come from behind through Joel Colwill's equaliser, and then could not find the second goal that the chances warranted. That pattern, Barry-Murphy acknowledged, is a recurring one.

"We're aware we haven't won this season. We're aware in many of the games we've played really well, created chances and haven't taken them," said the Cardiff head coach. "So we just have to keep improving and the goals will come if we keep getting in the same situations and just be a bit more ruthless in terms of how we don't give the opponents a head start."

Three of Cardiff's four draws have come after the Bluebirds fell behind. Coming from a goal down once is admirable; doing it repeatedly points to a defensive fragility that no volume of possession or shot attempts can paper over. Barry-Murphy himself conceded the pattern: "We're having to come back in all the games at the moment and that's a challenge in itself."

Injuries and a 15-year-old on the bench

Context matters, and Cardiff have been short of experienced bodies. Wales midfielder Rubin Colwill is nursing an ankle problem, and the injury list is long enough that the club named three teenagers on the bench against Stoke, including 15-year-old Noah Anyadike. That is not an excuse for a winless run, but it is a reason to treat any four-game upturn, if and when it arrives, with caution rather than celebration.

Barry-Murphy pointed to a squad that should strengthen as players return. "We have quite a few injuries so we'll get stronger as the season goes on," he said. That may well be true, but a Championship season does not pause to let you recover. Every game that passes without three points narrows the window.

Bielik starts despite ongoing investigation

One player who was available was Krystian Bielik, who started despite the fallout from Saturday's defeat at Portsmouth, where the 28-year-old was involved in a physical altercation with a home supporter as he went to retrieve a ball from the crowd. Barry-Murphy has stated that Bielik "got slapped in the face"; police are now investigating the incident and the Football Association is reviewing the referee's report. Barry-Murphy reported that Bielik trained well in the days between the two games and "felt ready to play" against Stoke, performing solidly on his return.

The table does not lie

Cardiff won promotion from League One last season under Barry-Murphy in his first year at the club. Returning to the Championship is a different test entirely, and the opening six games have underlined that. The back-to-back defeats at QPR and Portsmouth were the low point; the draw with Stoke at least showed a reaction in terms of performance, if not result.

Whether that reaction is the start of something or simply a slightly better version of the same outcome remains to be seen. At this level, 27 shots and a draw is a frustrating return regardless of context. Barry-Murphy's faith in his squad is clear and may yet prove justified. But Cardiff need wins, not just improvement, and the Championship table will keep an accurate record either way.
